HerAfCFTA: 100 Young Nigerians Graduate from Le Look Bag-Making Training Program

In furtherance of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) effort to foster Nigeria’s export-ready workforce and boost the country’s competitiveness in the global fashion and leather goods industry, 94 out of 100 young trainees have successfully completed and passed the bag-making training programme targeted to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The UNDP initiative aims to meet both local and international order demands. 

The three-month intensive training is a progressive product of a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) and LeLook Bags Academy.

Launched in October 2024, the initiative provided participants with advanced bag-making techniques that adhere with international standards enabling them to compete globally.

In a bid to meet the increasing local and international order demands, UNDP initiative targets young Nigerians, aims to develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting MSMEs.

In addition to technical training offered by the UNDP initiative, participants received guidance on market access, pricing strategies, and business development, empowering them with the entrepreneurial skills to start their own businesses or secure employment with established MSMEs.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, the UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative stated that, “Empowering young people with the right skills is critical to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential under AfCFTA. This programme has not only equipped participants with technical expertise, but is fostering an inclusive and skilled workforce, we are strengthening Nigeria’s position in regional trade and driving sustainable economic growth.”

In her remarks on the training experience, Ms. Akogwu Lucy Oyife said, “This training has been life-changing for me. Before now, I struggled to find opportunities, but through this programme, I’ve gained the skills and confidence to start my own bag-making business. I now have the knowledge to produce high-quality bags that meet export standards, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead.”

Also, Chief Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, Managing Director and CEO of LeLook Bag Academy giving her remarks during the ceremony mentioned that, “Beyond trade benefits, the training programme was designed to promote inclusivity and economic empowerment. It deliberately mainstreamed gender equality, with strong representation from women and youth, and ensured participation from Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This focus on inclusivity aligns with broader efforts to create sustainable livelihoods, reduce unemployment, and drive equitable economic growth.”

Founded in 2019 by the CEO of Le Look Bags, the Academy is recognized as a premier institution for mastering the art of bag-making and digital technology skills.
